Coneflower, Purple Echinacea purpurea Daisy-like blooms are purplish pink with domed spiny centers that are coppery, orange brown. The flower petals initially reach upward, then slowly expand and finally gracefully radiate downward from the domed seed head. Has a wonderfully long summer bloom period. Dark green, lance shaped leaves form an oval to upright clump. A native to the eastern U.S., it is sturdy, hardy and long-lived. Adapts to most soils. A good choice for tough conditions. Is attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds and the seed heads provide food for birds in the winter. Best in full sun.
