Hawthorn, Washington Crataegus phaenopyrum Washington Hawthorn is a small, decorative tree with a broadly oval to rounded shape. Clusters of small, single white flowers appear in May and early June. New foliage is reddish-purple turning glossy green. Fall leaf color is orange to red to purple. Bright red fruit carried on the tree fall through winter. Dense, twiggy branches cut down on road noise and light glare. Used as specimen tree, street planting or for naturalizing. Urban tolerant and good for sites that have confined root space and poor soil. Thorns deter deer browsing. Zone: 4-8 Height: 25-30 ft. Spread: 20-25 ft. | | |
